Thermally stratifying a wind tunnel for buoyancy influenced flows

چکیده

A novel method of heating wind tunnel flows to strong thermal stratifications is described. Variable electric heating is employed to create user-selectable temperature profiles in steady, uniform mean flow. Linear temperature gradients of up to 200~ (V/iisfil~i frequencies of 2.5 rad s1) can be sustained. The performance of the facility is discussed in the context of continuouslystratified grid-generated turbulence, although it is useful for a broader set of applications. The flow field is found to be free of deleterious natural convection and internal wave effects. The departure from homogeneity of grid-generated, stratified turbulence in the facility is roughly _+ 10% away from the wall influenced regions.

A Review of Recent Studies on Simulations for Flow around High-Speed Trains

Fluid flow around bluff bodies occurs in numerous fields of science and engineering, such as flows pass vehicles, cables, towers and bridges. These flows have been studied experimentally and numerically for the last several decades. The investigation of flow around high-speed trains is an important application of bluff bodies. Fluid flow, aerodynamic forces and moments, separation and wake regi...

Diurnal Mountain Wind Systems

Diurnal mountain wind systems are local thermally driven wind systems that form over mountainous terrain and are produced by the buoyancy effects associated with the diurnal cycle of heating and cooling of the lower atmospheric layers. This chapter reviews the present scientific understanding of diurnal mountain wind systems, focusing on research findings published since 1988. Slope flows are e...

Wind Tunnel Model Study of Turbulence Regime in The

Results from a wind tunnel model of the sheared atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) are presented and discussed. The model is realized in the thermally stratified wind tunnel of the Institute of Hydrology and Water Resources Planning (IHW), University of Karlsruhe. Design of the wind tunnel, and the technique employed for velocity and temperature measurements are described. The performe...

Cluster-Analysis Classification of Wintertime Wind Patterns in the Grand Canyon Region

Twelve typical wintertime wind patterns for the Grand Canyon region were derived from a two-stage cluster analysis wind-field classification scheme. The wind measurements were collected by a surface network of 15 stations deployed for a period of approximately three months. The wind patterns are strongly influenced by the complex terrain of the region. The analyses relate the wind patterns to m...

The fluid mechanics of natural ventilation-displacement ventilation by buoyancy-driven flows assisted by wind

This paper describes the fluid mechanics of natural ventilation by the combined effects of buoyancy and wind. Attention is restricted to transient draining flows in a space containing buoyant fluid, when the wind and buoyancy forces reinforce one another. The flows have been studied theoretically and the results compared with small-scale laboratory experiments. Connections between the enclosure...
